My first phone bill was over $50.00! Why?
Applicable installation charges were combined with standard charges for monthly services, plus any calling features. These charges include partial charges for the current month and full charges for a month in advance. Charges for long distance calls and telephone equipment purchased from UPTC may also have been included on your bill.
Who’s responsible for the repair of my telephone service?
UPTC is responsible for the repair and maintenance of:
|
The phone connection point (Telephone Network Interface, or TNI) normally located on the outside of the building (gray box) |
|
Outside buried phone service lines |
The customer is responsible for the repair and maintenance of:
|
The phone instrument |
|
The jacks and inside wiring |
|
Any other telecommunications devices used on your phone line, such as answering machines |
Please call our Repair Department at 906-639-2110 or 800-950-8798 to report any service outages, or for answers to your repair questions.
How can I avoid costly repairs?
When you subscribe to our maintenance program, Inside Wire PRO plan, UPTC will assume the responsibility for the maintenance and repair from the gray box (TNI) up to the phone instrument. For a low monthly fee you can avoid costly service calls and we will repair or replace all inside wiring and jacks, if needed. Inside Wire PROplan does not cover the repair or replacement of phones.
To sign up for Inside Wire PROplan, call 906-639-2111 or 800-950-8506, and ask to speak to a Customer Service Representative.
I am on a fixed income. Is there assistance available to help me reduce my phone bill?
Yes. If you are a residential phone account, you may be eligible for Lifeline or Link-Up discounts.

I want to plant a tree in my yard but am concerned about hitting my buried telephone line. Who do I call before I dig?
State law requires Michigan residents to call MISS DIG at 800-482-7171 or 811 before beginning any digging or excavation.
If you do not call to request a location of utility facilities, and damage to the facilities occurs, you may be liable for damage and repair costs.
Besides basic dial tone, what other services does UPTC offer?
Depending on where you live, UPTC offers optional services designed to meet
your specific communication needs. We offer basic calling features including Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling, Speed Calling, and Wake Up Reminder.
In addition, we offer advanced calling features including Caller ID, Voice Mail, Selective Call Acceptance, Selective Call Rejection and Selective Call Forwarding, among others.
If I am going on an extended vacation or away for the winter months, does UPTC offer vacation rates or temporary disconnection?
Yes. It’s called Number Retention Service! Number Retention Service allows you to reserve your telephone number and directory listing at a reduced rate while you are away for an extended period of time. Your telephone service will be temporarily disconnected while you are away, preventing fraudulent use of your phone service in your absence.
Will UPTC bill on behalf of other long distance companies so I can receive one bill for both my local and long distance phone service?
Yes, but on a limited basis. UPTC has billing contracts with AT&T and Alpha Long Distance,
and if either of those companies is your long distance provider, you will receive one bill
for both local and long distance phone service. All other providers will bill you directly for your long distance charges.
